Dear Friend,
An important announcement from the federal government that marks a significant step forward in addressing Canada’s housing crisis.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially launched Build Canada Homes, a new federal agency dedicated to accelerating the construction of affordable housing across the country. With an initial investment of $13 billion, this initiative aims to:
- Build 4,000 modular homes on six federally-owned sites in Ottawa, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Longueuil, and Dartmouth, with the capacity to scale up to 45,000 homes.
- Invest $1 billion in transitional and supportive housing for low-income households in collaboration with provinces, territories, municipalities, and Indigenous communities.
- Allocate $1.5 billion to the Canada Rental Protection Fund to preserve at-risk community rental apartments and ensure long-term affordability.
The agency, led by former Toronto city councillor Ana Bailão, will prioritize innovative construction methods like modular and mass timber housing while adhering to the federal government’s “Buy Canadian” policy to support local industries.
This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to double housing construction, lower housing costs, and make homeownership attainable for Canadians. It reflects a collaborative approach, working with private developers, community groups, and all levels of government to address the housing needs of Canadians.
As Prime Minister Carney said, “We’re in a housing crisis, and it’s going to take all hands on deck to get us out of it.”
